About Steve:

Steve Bulette was first introduced to wrestling as a freshman at Monte Vista High School in the Grossmont Union High School District, in San Diego county. Coached by Hall of Fame inductee Bill Clauder, Steve was a three-year varsity letterman and Grossmont Conference Champion. While preparing to transfer from Grossmont Community College, Steve was approached by Senior World Champion Roye Oliver, also one of tonight’s inductees, to join the new wrestling program at San Diego State University. Although the program was cut after one year, Steve continued his studies at SDSU earning a Bachelor degree in Mathematics, and later his Masters degree and teaching credential from National Univ.

Upon earning his teaching credential, Steve returned to his alma mater, Monte Vista, as the head wrestling coach and math teacher from 1996-2011. In 2011, he was offered an opportunity to serve as the head wrestling coach for Valhalla High School where his wife Tanya, was a school counselor. While leading the Norsemen, Steve had the opportunity to coach his own son, Gage until retiring as head coach in 2017. Bulette and his wrestling program have many accomplishments: Grossmont League Coach of the Year (six times), a dual match record of 142-25, four CIF-San Diego Divisional Team Championships, five CIF Divisional runners-up awards, along with several San Diego Section Masters top 10 finishes.

Steve was selected as the 2001 San Diego Section Coach of the Year, and he coached 33 CIF Divisional Champions, and 10 CIF State Championship placers among 24 State Qualifiers. Steve attributes much of his success to the support of his wife, Tanya, over 22 years. Together they have run over 60 high school level wrestling tournaments including numerous League, CIF Divisional, and CIF Masters Meet Championships. He has been the Tournament Director of the El Cajon Invitational, instrumental in making it one of the top tournaments in Southern California. Bulette was a member of the San Diego Wrestling Officials Association from 1990-1995, and he served from 1998 -2017 as the treasurer and secretary for the San Diego Wrestling Coaches Association.

Additionally, Steve served as the CIF Representative for the Grossmont League, and a member of the CIF-San Diego Section Wrestling Advisory Committee from 2006-2017. Steve Bulette has been a mentor to many young coaches in the Grossmont League and in the San Diego section. Several current head and assistant coaches in the Section either wrestled for, or once coached under him. Steve continues to serve as a resource for young coaches and the San Diego wrestling community.
