Guy served this country for seven years in the U.S. Navy, making three Westpac/Vietnam deployments on USS Berkeley DDG-15, a guided missile destroyer, from 1970-72, guarding carriers and mining Haiphing Harbor. Gist began his career as a wrestling coach as an assistant at Lakeside Boys Club in 1978. A year later, he was an assistant coach at the nearby El Cajon Boys Club. For the next two years, Guy was an assistant coach for the United Sports Association in Santee, CA. While serving as head coach of the Aztec Wrestling Club in Granite Hills, Guy also spent 1983-86 as the Junior Varsity Coach at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon.

He became the head wrestling coach there in 1987, and in his five years there (1987-91), the team won the Grossmont League Championship in 1987 and finished 5th in the CIF State Championships. Some of his best wrestlers at Granite Hills HS included these CIF San Diego Section champions: Tim Briggs (Masters Champion in 1985 and 1986, 4th in State in 1985), Tommy Vardell (Masters Champion and 5th at State in 1987), David Myers (Masters Champion and 4th at State in 1987), Aaron Gaeir (Masters Champion in 1987 and 1988, 3rd at State in 1987 and State Champion in 1988), Jake Gaeir (Masters Champion and 2nd at State in 1989), Nick Gist (Masters Champion in 1990), and Mike Wilkey (Masters Champion and 7th at State in1991).

After joining the San Diego Wrestling Officials Association in 1992-93, and from 1998-2005, Guy officiated at many events including two CIF State Championships in 2001 and 2004. He served as the Training Chairman for that group from 2000-05. Back to coaching as the JV Coach at El Cajon High School from 1994-97, they won Grossmont League Championships in 1995 and 1997, finishing 2nd in CIF both of those years. At El Cajon HS, Cedric Haymon was Masters Champion in 1996 and 1997, 4th at State in 1996 and 3rd at State in 1997. Guy returned to Granite Hills HS as an assistant coach from 2012-18. Guy is a second generation farrier (horseshoer) who has shod horses for over 50 years. He lives in Alpine with Marcy, his wife of 48 years.

Their son Nick wrestled, and he is a Colonel in the U.S. Army at West Point Military Academy, NY. Their younger son Erik also wrestled and is an illustrator/artist in Carlsbad. The family’s support during his decades of participation in wrestling contributed to his success, along with the help of fellow coaches Pete Grisafi, Bill Clauder and Glen Takahashi.
