Born and raised in New Jersey, Max wrestled at Pennsauken High School where he was also on the football team that won a State Championship in 1966. He wrestled there at Trenton State College where he was a Metropolitan Conference champion and a team captain on their undefeated Hall of Fame team of 1971-72. Calehuff was a NAIA District champion and a collegiate AllAmerican. Voted Outstanding Athletic Performer of the Year in 1970-71, he was selected as the 167-pound member of their Team of the Decade (1970-79) and inducted as an individual member into their Hall of Fame. Max coached at his college 1973-74 and in Florida high schools from 1976-80 before moving to California.

He officiated for 44 years starting in 1973 on the high school and NCAA Division 1 levels in New Jersey, Florida and California. With a Masters Degree in Education, he works as an Adapted Physical Education Specialist with special needs individuals and gifted athletes through wrestling and other sports. Calehuff has officiated in CIF Central Coast Section Tournaments since 1984, in CIF San Francisco Section Tournaments since 1993, and in five CIF State Championships. He has officiated in the California Community College Championships, in the San Francisco State All-Cal Tournament, and in dual matches for NCAA Div. 1, Div. II, Div. III, and NAIA events like the Cal-Poly Tournament in San Luis Obispo, the UC-Davis Aggie Open, the Lumberjack Tournament in Humbolt, the Menlo College, Santa Rosa, and Skyline Tournaments.

He has officiated the Reno Tournament in Nevada, and at collegiate events in New Jersey, including the Trenton State Open and the South Jersey Open. He has also officiated events in Florida, including the NCAA Div. II Southeast Section Qualifier, the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami, the Sunshine Open, and the University of Central Florida Open. Calehuff has also officiated international dual meets in Concord, Berkeley, Stockton and San Jose, involving teams from Canada, Cuba, Italy, Japan, and Sweden.

He has been a member of the USA Wrestling and AAU Officials Associations, and he has been in the Northern California Collegiate Wrestling Coaches & Officials Association for NCAA events since 1982, and in the National Wrestling Officials Association for NCAA events since 1988. Max is also a member of the Inter-collegiate Wrestling Officials Association, and he has been active in the California Wrestling Officials Association since 1992.
