About Dr. Warren:
Dr. Warren Boring established the wrestling program at Long Beach State, taking the 49ers into intercollegiate competition in 1958.
He coached the 49ers through 1965.
In 1961, LBSU finished the season with victories over Stanford, UCLA, San Francisco State, UC Santa Barbara and Arizona.
The first 49er wrestler to qualify for the NCAA tournament, Dale Deffner, was coached by Boring, who continued to teach in the Long Beach State physical education department until his retirement in 1988.
Boring began his coaching career at St. Francis Community High School in St. Francis, Kansas, in the fall of 1947 following his graduation from Kansas State University.
He coached St. Francis until the spring of 1953, when he left to attend the University
of Indiana, where he earned his doctorate. He led St. Francis to three regional titles, a league title and three state championships. He coached nine individual state champions, including two-time winner Paul Neville.
While working on his doctorate at Indiana, he assisted with the university’s wrestling team.
Boring was introduced to wrestling as a teen at the YMCA in Kansas City, and he spent a lifetime learning and teaching the sport.
At 16 years old he entered the Kansas National Guard, which offered him the opportunity to successfully pursue wrestling before entering college. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1938 and enrolled at the University of Kansas. When the wrestling program at Kansas disbanded he enrolled at Kansas State in 1939.
Following World War II, where he was awarded three Purple Hearts, he returned to Kansas State and was elected captain of the wrestling team for the 1946-47 season.
Upon earning his doctorate in 1956, he continued his career in education at California State College at Long Beach.
Boring initiated college courses in wrestling as part of the physical education program before founding the LBSU wrestling team.
Dr. Boring published various articles and books about wrestling, including Science and Skill of Wrestling in 1975.
An original member of the Southern California Wrestling Association, he was inducted into the LBSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994 and into the Kansas State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998.
