About Mike:

Mike started wrestling at Mira Costa High School in 1959, coached by Jack Fernandez, where he placed 3rd at CIF Masters two times. Mike went on to BYU from 1962-1967. After wrestling for BYU, he moved to Santa Barbara and started the wrestling program in both the Junior High and the High School. In 1971, Mike was the first wrestling coach at Dos Pueblos High School, and within four years they won the CIF Masters in 1975. He was named 1975 Coach of the Year by the Southern California Wrestling Association, and he was twice Santa Barbara High School Coach of the Year.

His teams at Dos Pueblos went on to win 3 CIF Championships, two second places and one third place. They won 15 League Championships (13 consecutive) with a league dual meet record of 149-9, and a combined dual record of 268-21. Mike had two State Champions and 10 State place-winners, 9 CIF Individual Champions, 41 CIF placers, and 107 individual league champions.

His teams won 37 tournaments, including CIT, Mira Costa, and Cupertino . In 1986, he served as a member of the CIF-Southern Section advisory board for wrestling . He also hosted and competed against two cultural exchange teams from Japan and one from Germany. After stepping down as the Head Coach for wrestling, Mike served as an assistant coach to Carson Wollert, Mike Yamasaki and Anthony Califano. Mike retired from teaching in 2007 after 40 years in the Santa Barbara School District.

He still helps out Dos Pueblos HS wrestling with photography and running dual meets, tournaments and some practices. He was inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008, and into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame as a Wrestling Coach in 2001.
