About Ashlee:

Ashlee was a high school conference champion and State placer in 1964. He was a conference champion again at Junior College before transferring to San Francisco State University where he won the Far West Conference Championship while being selected as the Outstanding Wrestler. He went on to place in the NCAA Division II Nationals and earned All-American status.

Ashlee had to raise money to get to Mankato State University and hitchhiked in snow from the Minneapolis airport to the tournament, wearing an overcoat given to him by a driver.

In the Greco-Roman Nationals, Sherman placed 2nd. He was an alternate on the 1976 US Olympic Greco-Roman team.

Ashlee was a great competitor who brought great physical conditioning and masterful mat sense to all his matches. He represented the San Francisco Olympic Club in national competitions.

Sherman was Head Coach of the California Junior Greco-Roman National team. He served as an assistant coach for the USA Wrestling Senior World Team in San Diego, and he was also an assistant coach for wrestling and football at San Francisco State. Ashlee has been a teacher and Wrestling Head Coach at Oakland Technical High School since 1972 — for more than 40 years. He has been a member of the Bay Area Wrestling Association for more than 40 years.

His dedication to the community and BAWA is unmistakeable. In 1964, he started the Wan-Tu-Wazuri Wrestling Club for Oakland youth, and he continues to run it today.

“I have been fighting to keep wrestling alive in the Oakland and Bay area,” says Sherman. “My wrestling club practices two or three days a week, and there is no charge; only a USA membership is required.”

Sherman has been a USA Wrestling Official since 1994, and he is a USA Wrestling Bronze Coach. He has been inducted into the BAWA Hall of Fame and the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.
