About Dr. Armand:
Armand wan an outstanding wrestler at South San Francisco High School (1967 graduate), undefeated in his junior year and winner of the North State Championship. At the College of San Mateo, he was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Nor-Cal College Conference in 1969.
After transferring to Chico State University, Armand won back-to-back championships in the Far West Conference. Among the top qualifiers for the National Tournament in his senior year of 1971, he was unable to attend due to the sudden death of his father.
Brett was Head Wrestling Coach at Chico State from 1974-1991. His teams won seven FWC and Northern California Athletic Conference championships, including a record six consecutive years. His team won the NCAA Division II Western Region Team Championship in 1991, defeating the defending national champions. Armand was named FWC and NCAC Coach of the Year six times, and he had 52 conference champions and 29 NCAA Div. II All-Americans. His wrestlers were awarded 105 Academic First Team Awards and acquired the most Academic All-American Awards in the nation (Div. II).
Brett was a member of the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee from 1983-1989. This work culminated with presentation of the National Collegiate Wrestling Officials Association President’s Award for Distinguished Service. Armand was the first to win such an award from the association.
He personally developed and led implementation of the end-of-match tie breaking rules that are still in use today in high school and college, though modified since. This involved getting the NCAA Rules Committee to support a season long trial in Armand’s home conference for transition from the old “sudden death and referee’s decision” system to a new “ice-breaker” concept. He also led an attempt for the NCAA to improve the performance of the mat officials at all three NCAA National Wrestling Tournaments.
