About David:
At Sacramento Community College, David Pacheco earned a record of 54-21-2 while placing fourth at California Community College State at 167 pounds in 1977. He was one of the first three Academic All-Americans there, and he was voted their Outstanding Wrestler. After transferring to Idaho State University, David compiled a record of 46-18-0 while winning Big Sky Conference Championships in 1978 and 1979 and qualifying for the NCAA Division 1 Championships both years. In 1979, he was voted the ISU Outstanding Wrestler, while setting the ISU record of 28 wins in a season. He was twice on the Big Sky Wrestling All-Academic teams, and he was the Idaho State Freestyle and Greco-Roman Champion in 1980. He qualified that year for the U.S. Olympic trials in Freestyle. Pacheco began his 35-year coaching career as a one-year assistant at Idaho State, followed by two years as assistant coach at Burbank High School. After a year as assistant coach at Sacramento City College, Jay has been head coach for wrestling there for 31 years, compiling a record of 23 9 wins -103 losses and 4 ties — the most wins of any SCC coach. He has coached 20 individual State Champions, 78 All-Americans, 135 State Medalists, 45 individual Regional Champions, 97 individual Conference Champions, and 70 Academic All-Americans. During his years at SCC, Pacheco’s teams won the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships in 1996 and in 2013, and they have enjoyed 11 Top 5 finishes and 20 Top 10 finishes. Sacramento City College also won the CCCAA State Dual Championship in 2000 and finished second in 2013. His teams have won 12 Conference Championships and six Regional Championships. David has earned many Conference and Regional Coach of the Year awards, and he was twice selected as State Coach of the Year. He received the Coaching Achievement Award for the CCCCA in 2011, and he received the NWCA Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Award in both 2004 and in 2010. In 1996, he was California Coaches Association Community College Coach of the Year. He has served as a National Wrestling Coaches Association Representative and Board Member for the past 15 years, serving as Chair of the State Officials selection committee for the same time. Pacheco has been Chair of the Academic All-American selection for over 20 years, and he has been Chair of the Big 8, Big 7 and Bay Valley Conferences for over 17 years.
