After placing third in the first CIF State Championship Tournament at 112 pounds for Gonzales High School of the Central Coast Section, Rudy Guevara was a three-time Pacific Coast Athletic Association Champion who also served as team captain at San Jose State University from 1973-78. His college record was 106 wins with only 28 losses. After graduating from SJSU, Rudy accepted a position as assistant coach there from 1978 to 1985. He was selected for his first international coaching assignment with the USA Team tour to Poland and Russia. Later tours took him to Japan, Germany, Puerto Rico and to Mexico City for the Pan American Games in 1994. Guevara was honored to coach wrestling in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, and in the 1990 World Cup in Turkey. He was the fourth coach in U.S. history to coach in four Olympic Festivals: in Houston (1986), in Minneapolis (1990), in Los Angeles (1991 ), and in San Antonio (1993 ). These experiences and endeavors motivated him to enter the teaching and coaching profession. Rudy taught and coached at Santa Teresa High School from 1983-2003, also serving as the Head Coach and Director of the San Jose USA Wrestling Club, 1980-2003. He was Head Coach and Director of the California Junior Olympic Team from 1981-1991, and he was on the USA National Coaching Staff from 1986-2004. Guevara has been a director, event coordinator or consultant or to many wrestling and other sports events and groups, including: the USA Wrestling National Tournament; USA vs. World All-Stars; USA vs. Belarus (Russia); Junior Olympic State Championships; Western Regional Championships; Western Regional Olympic Trials; USA vs. Ireland Boxing Match; Oracle U.S. Open Track and Field Meet; Valley Care Foundation Golf Tournament, and more. He was a spokesperson for the 2012 San Francisco Olympic bid and for Northern California Olympians, and he worked with Save School Sports Programs, Special Olympics, and the Make a Wish Foundation. Rudy served as technical advisor for the motion pictures “One More Shot” and “Lloyd.” Guevara has served on the Board of Directors for the San Jose State University Hall of Fame, been Director of the University of Minnesota National Summer Youth Camps, been Director of the Junior Olympics Coaches Education Program, and served on the Board of Directors for the California Junior Olympics.
