About Bob:
In the first four years after Mount Miguel High School was opened in Spring Valley, Bob wrestled for Coach Ben Duea and compiled a record of 60-4 between 1957and 1961. The teams were runners-up in the CIF-Southern Section in 1958 and in 1960 and won a State Championship. At Utah University in 1961 and 1962, Steckman played football and wrestled on the NCAA level, compiling a record of 12-4.
He then attended Grossmont College in La Mesa where he had a record of 9-3 and finished 4th at the California Community College Regionals. He completed his education with a MA at California Western University where there was no wrestling team. So he played football, and he won All-Pacific Coast League and All- NAIA honors. Bob coached both football and wrestling at Vista High School in San Diego County from 1967-71, and later at San Pasqual High School in Escondido from 1984-87.
His wrestling teams won two League Championships and a 3rd place at the CIF Tournament before there was a Masters Meet. In between those assignments, he started and directed the City Summer Wrestling Program in Carlsbad from 1973-75. He then helped to initiate a wrestling program at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in 1976. A long-time wrestling official, Steckman has officiated numerous high school duals, CIF tournaments, Regionals, Masters, and State Championships. He also officiated community college duals, North/South All-Star Tournaments, NAIA and NCAA events between 1967 and 1999. He officiated often at the Biola and Las Vegas Tournaments.
In the San Diego Wrestling Officials Association, Bob has held the positions of President, Vice President, training and evaluating chairman, and assignment secretary. He was also the State Tournament Evaluator of officials. He has supported wrestling through fund-raising and other community work since then. Steckman has also been involved with Lions International where he has held all local offices, including Zone Chairman, Regional Chairman, Dwight E. Stanford Fellow, Harry J. Aslan Fellow, and Melvin Jones Fellow. Bob has also been involved with Junior Golf.
